Knight Street: A Medieval Passage

In Rhodes, a charming and favored spot exists, a quaint lane that whisks visitors back to the era of chivalry and martial triumphs. This historic alley, merely 200 meters long and 6 meters wide, was once lined with the residences of powerful merchants, clergy, and the esteemed Knights of the Order of St. John. It’s a broad, stone-paved path enclosed by the ancient walls of these storied homes.

You wouldn’t catch a glimpse of any modern pubs, eateries, or shops from this spot, offering a unique chance to step into the shoes of a medieval local from the Isle of Roses. Originally part of the ancient town built by knights in the 14th century, this street was exclusive to the chivalrous class. Commoners could only speculate about the secrets beyond the formidable stone barriers. Back then, the street housed the inns of the Order’s national groups, known as «tongues». Each group had its own tavern, a favored spot for members to gather and celebrate.

Thanks to its unique location and construction features, this street has been remarkably preserved until today. Now, every traveler can admire the solid crests adorning the buildings, intricately carved doorways, robust facade windows, angular towers, and crenellated walls. Evenings bring a special charm here. The dim glow of street lamps casts an enchanting ambiance, almost expecting a knight in shining armor to emerge around the corner.

Attractions of the Street

Today, the street remains a vital part of the island’s heartbeat. It’s lined with key government buildings and cultural institutions. Among the street’s most notable landmarks is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights. This historic edifice once hosted clandestine gatherings of 19 powerful masters who controlled the Eastern Mediterranean.

Visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. Discover a treasure trove of ancient artifacts, spanning weapons to armor, in this museum. Near the end of this central street, you’ll find a historical building with a past as a Byzantine temple, a Catholic church, and a mosque.

It’s a breeze to get here, nestled in the heart of the island, just a stone’s throw from the Fortress of Rhodes.
