How to get

In the heart of Rhodes' Old Town lies the Hospice of St. Catherine, an ancient structure with its origins in the years 1391–1392. Despite suffering damage over the centuries, particularly after the 15th century, it now stands restored for visitors to admire.

Brief History

The Old Town of Rhodes is dotted with buildings that might seem ordinary at first glance. Without knowledge of their significance, one might simply walk by. However, guided tours through the Old Town will ensure that the tales and importance of places like the Hospice of St. Catherine are shared with those who seek to uncover the past.

Built in the late 14th century by Italian architect Domenico d’Allemagna, an admiral of the Knights Hospitaller, this historical site owes its funding to Grand Master Juan Fernandez de Heredia. Named after St. Catherine, the edifice stands by the martyr’s gate within the Old Town, granting it its distinguished title.

Major construction of the hospice concluded in 1392, but its decorative elements and crests took another 200 years to complete, finalized around 1516 under Grand Master Fabrizio del Carretto. The building suffered damage over the years, notably during the 1480 siege of Rhodes and an earthquake in 1481. It was likely rebuilt after these events because it housed distinguished guests until 1995. Between 1986 and 1995, 16 families resided there before being relocated for the building’s restoration, aimed at returning its historical grandeur. Prior to 1986, the authorities housed immigrants from nearby islands within its dilapidated walls.

The hospice suffered greatly during the 1944 air raids, with its eastern wing demolished; the entire Jewish quarter faced similar destruction. Restoration efforts for the hospice kicked off around 1994–1995. Prior to this, extensive archaeological excavations took place over six years, aiming to accurately recreate the building’s original design and distinctive characteristics.

Located in the historic Old Town, near Martyron Square, Saint Catherine’s Hospice is a notable landmark you’ll encounter on your journey through the eastern side of Rhodes.

Tips

  • The hospice floors can be quite slippery, so it’s best to wear shoes with good traction when visiting.
  • Despite its over five-century history and its status as a unique gem of the city, it’s not worth a trip on its own. Consider dropping by if you’re already exploring the area.
  • During the winter months, the hospice implements restricted access. Visitors are not permitted entry during this period.
