How to get

At the quaint Faethon farm, a team of passionate volunteers dedicates their time to breeding Rhodesian miniature horses. This place is a hit with the little ones, offering them the joy of feeding and riding these gentle creatures.

Discovering Faethon’s Charm

Tucked away on Rhodes, Faethon might not be on every traveler’s radar, which is a bonus for visitors seeking a warm and intimate welcome. With no entry fee, this hidden gem is especially appealing for families with young children, ensuring an affordable and friendly adventure.

The farm’s highlight is its Rhodesian miniature horses, standing about 110–115 cm tall. Travelers often refer to them as ponies, but these are naturally smaller and have not been selectively bred by humans. They boast a more elegant and symmetrical physique compared to ponies. Their manes are lush, long, and shimmer in the sunlight. Their legs are slender yet muscular, ending in small, sturdy hooves. Their tails are notably long and attractive. Regarding their coat colors, you’ll find dark brown, reddish-brown, and black horses, many with white markings on their foreheads. Also, take note of their delicate and petite ears.

The Significance of Rhodes' Equines

The Rhodesian horse breed has a long-standing connection with the island of Rhodes. These horses are a testament to natural evolution rather than human scientific intervention. Their physique matches larger breeds, distinguishing them from selectively bred ponies. By the 1950s, approximately 150 horses were on Rhodes. However, by the 2000s, only a tiny herd of six remained in the Kututsis highlands. Learning this, the Small Horse Protection Association, founded in 2001, set up a modern sanctuary. They built spacious stables, yards, grazing lands, and even automatic feeders with waterers to ensure the horses' comfort. A visit to the farm will certainly confirm the quality of these facilities.
