Rhodes' Seven Springs, known in Greek as Epta Piges, are a natural sanctuary renowned for their beauty. This verdant retreat offers a serene atmosphere where time slows down.

Rhodes' Natural Wonder: The Seven Springs

The Seven Springs are a network of natural springs that emerge at seven different points, feeding into the Loutanis River. The waters are then directed through a concrete tunnel, culminating in the creation of a man-made lake. This lake is unique on Rhodes as a freshwater body and serves as an irrigation source for the surrounding Kolymbia region.

Visitors flock to the Valley of the Seven Springs in Rhodes, not just for sightseeing, but to experience a unique walk through a water-filled concrete tunnel. Originally built by Italians in the 1930s for practical reasons, this tunnel now serves as an unusual attraction. It’s pitch-dark inside, prompting some to navigate by touch while others use flashlights or phones for guidance. The tunnel, stretching approximately 150–180 meters, promises a memorable journey, especially as a cool refuge from the heat. It’s narrow and allows for single-file passage, so expect a wait as many are eager to test the healing waters. Local folklore suggests that a barefoot stroll in these waters can absolve men of seven sins and rejuvenate women by seven years.

Nestled among ancient sycamore trees, the Valley of the Seven Springs is a picturesque spot perfect for leisurely strolls. The area is a haven for diverse wildlife, including ducks, turtles, peacocks, and mountain goats, making it ideal for a family outing. There are also well-marked trails for those who enjoy hiking.

Close to the springs, visitors will find a cozy family-run eatery serving delicious local Rhodian cuisine and offering coffee with a view. Don’t forget to check out the nearby gift shop for some unique souvenirs.

Navigating the Valley of Seven Springs

No need for maps or guides to find your way in the Valley of Seven Springs; just follow the crowd at the tunnel entrance. All amenities are nearby, and each spring is sequentially numbered for those keen to visit everyone. Located 30 km from Rhodes city, buses to the valley can be caught from the central station at Rimini Square, costing roughly €4. Timetables should be checked locally. Buses from Faliraki are also available for those coming from the resort town.

To avoid the common congestion caused by buses at the tunnel entrance, driving to Seven Springs is advisable. For a smoother journey, aim for off-peak times like early mornings. Head towards Kolymbia and follow the signs to Epta Piges. Conveniently, there’s complimentary parking available nearby.

Tips

  • If you’re uncomfortable in the dark or have claustrophobia, be aware that the tunnel walk is pitch-black. Alternatively, a scenic walk to the lake is possible. Tall visitors, be cautious—the tunnel’s ceiling is just 180 cm high.
  • Plan a day trip that includes the Valley of the Seven Springs, Tsambika Monastery, and the villages of Archipoli and Archangelos for a full experience.
  • Before embarking on a tunnel adventure, consider your footwear. Opt for any type of sandals designed for the beach or aqua shoes to protect against sharp rocks underwater. For exploring the surrounding areas, sneakers are advisable. Don’t forget to carry a flashlight for added safety.
