How to get

Greece tops European charts with its pristine, picturesque beaches. Among them, Anthony Quinn Bay in Rhodes stands out with a tale of its own.

Naming Legacy

During the spring and summer of 1960, Rhodes became a film set for «The Guns of Navarone,» starring Anthony Quinn. This actor, who would later be famous for his role as Zorba the Greek, lent his name to this scenic bay.

Anthony Quinn was so enchanted by Rhodes that he purchased land there. It’s said he got the land for a nominal fee at the time, as a thank you for promoting the island and boosting Greece’s tourism. The area later became known as Anthony Quinn Bay, with the Greek Prime Minister’s approval. Quinn’s original plan was to turn it into a hub for filmmakers and artists. He took the initiative to make the beach accessible, constructing a road through the mountains and providing water and amenities at his own expense.

In 1984, upon completion of all proceedings, the Greek government voided the beachfront property deal, citing a policy that prevented sales to non-native Greeks. This sparked a fierce legal battle between actor Anthony Quinn and the state, persisting until his passing in 2001. His widow continued the fight thereafter, but to no avail, as the land now belongs to the state.

Facilities

Visitors to Rhodes often bask in the blissful ambiance of Anthony Quinn Bay, oblivious to its rich historical backdrop. The bay’s natural allure offers a perfect setting for relaxation.

The beach is well-equipped for comfort. Showers, sun umbrellas, and loungers are available for a fee of €10 per set. There are also restrooms, complimentary parking, a café, and rental services for canoes and catamarans. For diving enthusiasts, a local dive center provides gear for rent and experienced instructors to guide you to the best diving spots, including stunning reefs and caves.

Nestled on Rhodes island, Anthony Quinn Bay boasts a secluded beach, much-loved for its vivid turquoise waters and lush surrounding greenery. Its rocky shore and pebble-strewn beach make it less frequented by families but a haven for youth and snorkeling enthusiasts. The surrounding hills, accessible via narrow paths, offer stunning panoramic views, especially when captured at dawn or dusk when the beach is serene. Despite its popularity during peak season, finding a spot on the rocks or a free sun lounger can be a challenge.
